A child was sat looking out of his window, he saw stars and the mystic shadow of the mountain in the distant, he could hear his grand mother walking around next door as she do every night tiding all up, and putting away things that the child had left out. A door clicked it was the signal to say she was coming into his room to tell  him his night time story.

The child was all tucked up and warm in bed, his grand mother sat on the old chair next to the bed, with her thick woollen blanked tucked around her knees. “Now what should I tell you to night?”…the child wriggled, “Nan tell me more about the animals in the forest” .Nan chuckled

" This time I will tell you about the little Wren and the Fox, both so different yet both good friends. Wren was always sat in the branches of the old Ivy, which covered part of the old oak tree, it was a branch that on a night of a bad storm it came down, when ivy was young it stretched and grew over it, well now Ivy is big, and strong, it has many hiding places for all sorts of birds and animals, it keeps them dry when it rains, warm in the winter and cool in the heat of the summer."

Fox and Wren

Now Fox lived right under Ivy, as Wren lived in the Ivy, she use to warn all about humans coming near
As fox would chase off animals that would try to get to Wrens nest.
One spring morning, hen, fox was walking in the woods, he was caught in a trap that the farmer had put down for rabbits, he screamed, cried, howled for help, he was too far away from the Old Oak Tree for any to hear, as night was getting near Wren was getting worried, Oak Tree asked Wren to fly out to look for Fox, which  she did, she first flew towards the garden of Farmer Brown as fox loved to go there to tease his chickens, she saw the big cockerel, flew to him, “Mr Cockerel, have you seen cheeky fox?” Now he did not like to take his eye of his hens, he was always on alert, “ no, and if I did I would chase him off”  Little wren bobbed saying thank you and flew off.
She flew to the big field Farmer Brown was in, he was turning the soil over she thinks it was called ploughing, she loved it when this happened as all juicy little grubs where turned over with the soil , she use to pop down and have a feast, but to day fox was missing and that was more important, she could not see fox so off she flew in to the woods.
She had only gone a short way in when, she heard Fox crying in pain. She called out to him but all she could hear was the pain cry he made, so like a clever little bird she followed the sound, and soon found Fox, he was all messed up with dirt and leaves, she saw his back leg looking funny as it was all caught in a wire, she looked closer, Fox tried to move but the pain was so bad he stopped, “Fox I do not know what to do, I cannot get that wire off you, I will see what Oak Tree says” with a flick of her tail off she flew.
Now oak tree was very clever, and was also the oldest living thing in the woods so he had seen more than any one else and knew how to get things done, after listening to little wren, he thought, looked down to wren and said “ go to the cottage at the fork in the road, in there is an old lady she loves her woods and is always helping animals in a lot of ways, you have to try and get her to follow you, “ Wren looked at the Oak Tree, bobbed and flew off.
Sitting on the fence Wren was pondering as to how to get the old Lady out when, the old lady came out with some crumbs for her bird table, she saw little Wren walked over to pass a few crumbs to it, as she done this she made Wren jump, making her fall a little, that was wren had an idea, she flapped her wings and made such a noise the old Lady went through the gate towards little Wren, as the old Lady got just near Little Wren, she fluttered her wings making it look as if she was hurt, but some how moved a bit, soon the old Lady was following Little Wren each time she got near Little Wren would flutter and move a little, soon they where near Fox, Little Wren landed on Fox as the Old Lady came near, the Old Lady gasped, she bent to fox, and soon had him free, wrapped up in her shawl, but Little Wren was no where to be seen, the old Lady looked for it, but could not find her, she held fox firm but not tight, she took him to her cottage called the vet, this is an animal Doctor, who came to the cottage to take care of fox.
Fox was away for a long time, soon all heard him rushing through the woods, calling as he ran, “I’m back, I’m back” as he neared the Oak Tree he slowed down looked around and saw no one, not even the little ants that are usually scurrying around on their search, he walked over to Oak Tree, sat and looked at him, “I’m back Oak Tree”, Oak Tree swayed a little a deep friendly voice spoke, “ and who are you?” Fox looked up at the Oak Tree, and towards the Ivy that was covering the broken branch off Oak Tree, “I live under there with Rabbit and Wren ohh and Mr Robin” fox looked around, sighed looked up at Oak Tree, “ I’m Fox, don’t you remember me?” as he said those words, all the animals, birds and even Oak Tree creaked a welcome home, as all shouted it all at once, Wren popped down to fox, looked up at him chirped a welcome home then hopped on to Fox head, “Oak Tree kept us all informed how you where, he saw you coming home so we made this surprise for you, “ Fox looked around, I am home now with all my friends and family, and I will not chase Farmers chickens any more then he will not set those traps, and I promise to always stay in the wood and be good”, well fox kept his promise most of the time, he also met and had a wife, but that’s another story for another day.
